FarmsReach: Eating local goes mobile

Posted by Busybee on 01 Apr 13:42

FarmsReach is a new US site that’s aiming to put fresh, local foods on your table even if your own thumb is less than green. Started in 2007 by a team of technology, agriculture and sustainability professionals, the company’s goal is to help farmers get on the Web, using it as a new channel to sell to an increasingly interested localvorian public.

The site, currently in beta in select U.S. cities, allows farmers and other local food producers to create online “Producers’ stalls”, where they can show off their wares. Customers then pick out what they want, and FarmsReach does the work on the back-end to generate pick-lists and schedule delivery times from participating farms to the customer’s nearest market.

FarmsReach founder Melanie Cheng worked for over ten years in the tech industry before starting OmOrganics.org, a nonprofit organization focused on sustainable agriculture in the San Francisco Bay Area. With her new venture, she hopes to create better infrastructure for the farming industry, which will help both regional communities and people looking to eat more healthily and sustainably. They’ll also be providing carbon footprint information, so that consumers and participating restaurants can see how much of their carbon footprint they’ve reduced by buying locally.
