I also find light-ish weight durable plastic crates great if you do big shopping.
It's the kind of use a durable material like plastic *should* be put to.

We have a large bag from IKEA. I use this to carry all the boxed & cans from our food shopping.

It actually makes it easier to lift one bag from the trolley to the car and back out.

My wife and I have gotten used to having these around as well. Add to this that we get a $.05 per bag discount every time we use one and the 12 or so bags we have now have almost paid for themselves already... :)

I have grown accustomed to having several bags in the trunk of my car and have also added a few to my wife's trunk as well. That way, I have a back-up in case I forget to grab a bag on my way out the door.
I also have a chico bag in my glove box and my work bag. These reusable bags crumple into a tiny pouch, so they are very convenient to stash away. I think they are around $5, so they won't break the bank.
