find an elegant, ecofriendly alternative to the dishwasher
Our dishwasher broke down and although I believe that handwashing dishes in our family's way uses about the same amount of water and electricity as a modern dishwasher, I want to start wasshing dishes by hand as it makes me more resilient. So I'm researching an above-sink drainer and am getting one made locally. I will post a photo when it's installed. We're talking about washing for a family of six...

I have never used a dishwasher in my adult life (20+ years) though one has usually been previously installed wherever I have lived. I use dishwashers for extra kitchen storage. I have heard the "studies" about dishwashers using less electricity than handwashing but I wonder who truly funds these studies. Moreover, I cannot imagine that handwashing uses more electricity/fuel to heat the water than a dishwasher. It just doesn't add up logically. I use very little water with my soap so I only fill up the sink about 1/4-1/3 of the way with water.

Science to the rescue! I'll run a week long test. I have a diversion valve on my plumbing that lets me save grey water for plants and the like. I'll do a few days' dishes using both methods and see what happens. Then I'll report back.
Yes, by doing a test like this, I have gone over to the dork side.

I also read that there's a new dishwasher that uses 9l of water per wash, which is about what we use for a meal. It's a tough call, but my decision is more to do with resilience in the face of peak oil (a transition town approach) - the less we depend (as a family) on fossil fuel energy the more able we will be to adapt. So by the time it's too expensive to run a dishwasher, I'll be adept at the old j cloth! I've sorted a system by the way, and will post a photo soon.

I heard somewhere that its actually more efficient then handwashing because it uses less water...
