We wanted to switch all the lights in our house over to LED but it was cost prohibitive. We have however changed all the lights that we can over to CFL. This was a costly venture initially due to the cost of the bulbs being almost $6 US each.
Not onlywill you save a bundle, you dont have to change them for a LONG time. I changed all our bulbs years ago and haven't changed a blown one yet. Especially nice in hard to reach spaces

New website (that I have nothing to do with), http://www.unscrewamerica.com, promoting switching to energy-saving bulbs. Good way to get people involved.

I have also recently moved into a rented apartment. We made sure to replace all of our free standing bulbs with Energy Saving ones, but all other light fittings use the really expensive halogen bulbs... should there not be some encouragement for building companies to fit energy saving bulb fittings as standard... these would be an easy and effective solution to help change? Surely there is a government grant available for this?

Easier said then done. I have a good few x10 dimmer units in the fuse board, which I will have to replace first with switching units (with no stand-by power). After that it would be save to replace the light bulbs with CFL’s.
British Gas have a scheme where if you upgrade your Gas meter they send you a box of free lightbulbs to say 'thanks'.

We have had energy saving lightbulbs for a few years now. I did however stock up with a load more when Tesco had them on offer for 1p recently!

As soon as we moved in to our new rented flat, I made sure I replaced all the bulbs with energy saving bulbs. I'll change them back again when we move, as I'm not giving my landlord those expensive new bulbs! ;-)
Annoyingly, the hall light has 3 spots in a cluster rather than 3 bulbs, and energy saving bulbs for that are *really* expensive and would be of no use to me when we next move. And the bulbs are 50W each, so that's a combined wattage of 150W for that light rather than the 11W if it had a normal light fitting. (being in rented accomodation, I can't change the light fitting).
