Edenbee

Fill my kettle with only as much water as I need.

Your morning cuppa could be costing you more than it should be. Filling the kettle to the top when you only need a mug of water wastes electricity. Put in only as much as you need and you'll save money. It'll boil quicker too. Milk and two sugars, please!

We share our kettle use. Whenever anyone is boiling a kettle, everyone is asked if they want a coffee/tea/hot drink and the kettle is filled to accommodate those preferences.

i have 2 black marks on my kettle, first one is a loaner cuppa for me in the morning, second is for if a friend comes over, 2 cups only! drives me crazy when someone else fills it, and thinks there making tea for the nation!

I always fill my cup with tap water and then I put it in my kettle. So I won't waste any water=)

I've reviewed the three main 'eco kettles' on the market over here (and one is *much* better-looking than the Eco Kettle you rightly find ugly):

Tefal make a electric kettle that dispenses boiling water straight into the cup, instantly.

I use filtered water in my kettle so I try to use only the right amount.

Old filters can be recycled by taking them back to the shop.

I must say I live in a fairly conscious house. We even have one of those kettle's that only boils the amount you require. Nice idea but what a bad design, I won't name names but you know who you are. Can we have more better designed eco products please!

  2. If there's cold boiled water in the kettle, is it bad to tip it away and get fresh water? Tea isn't as nice with old water. 5 answers

Yes it is bad. But I know what you mean about the taste. Maybe it's just a psychological thing though?

Yeah, good idea duncehat. I use filtered water in my kettle so I try to use only the right amount. (Filtered water definitely improves tea, especially in hard water areas)

I chain-drink tea during the day. To save energy and reduce the time it takes to boil the next cup I re-fill the kettle with a cup or two of water as soon as I've transfered the water to the tea pot. The water is still "fresh" enough when I come to boil it 45 minutes later.

If I'm super orgainised I'll make myself two cups of tea and put one in an insulated mug, saving me the bother of making the next cup.

Tea pots with a tea cosy just keeps your water warm to use again. Plus the whole reboiled water makes a unpleasant cup of tea is a myth.
