Edenbee

Take my next holiday near to home

Don't leave! We were just getting to know each other. Thousands of tourists come here every year to check out the attractions in this country. With gorgeous countryside, rambling ruins, stunning beaches and centuries of history to explore you can see why. The best bit? You can get to it all without the hassle of airport security and flying. Flying is far and away leader in the race for 'things most likely to damage the environment that we can avoid'. Stay at home, see your home country through new eyes and know that no-one is going to be rummaging through your dirty underwear at customs this year.

Living in Sydney, Australia puts us in the lucky position of having a wealth of great holidays within driving distance. We drove the equivalent of a London - Paris flight, from Sydney to Selwyn Snowfields. Its a hit, and we'll be going Snowboarding and Skiing next year, too!

Have decided to take my next holiday in the UK, so will be heading down to Devon and Cornwall for a week of camping. Just hope the weather lasts out.

I took a trip to Scotland in April/May but instead of flying (from Ireland) we drove up to Larne and took a ferry across... It was absolutely beautiful over there! My last trip was to Carlingford in Co. Louth, and we took up our bicycles and explored the peninsula at our own pace. Hoping to go and visit my brother in London later in the summer, planning to get the boat across to Britain and catch a train down to London.

Struck lucky with the weather last week and spent a week in East Portlemouth, Devon.

Stunning scenery. Quiet beaches. And rather than being stressed out about stressful airport experiences, we drove down in our own time and made a day of it.

Ok, so the driving's not great -- but it's considerably better than air miles.

Well I can't quite bring myself to give up international travel just yet but now that I'm one of 3 I find myself taking the kids on more convenient trips...weekends in Killkeny, wild boat trips to Inishboffin and more recently 2 weekends in a row to the very west of cork the most enjoyed holiday in a long time....after the long drive though I am less inclined to use the car! So yes I will take more local family holidays...but I can't quite give up my little sneaky trips abroad....what can I do to offset my air miles????

Am off to Hay-on-Wye in the summer for a Welsh break. This is partially because we have a new baby son and the thought of going on a plane with him is not one I wish to tackle just yet! Am looking forward to enjoying the lovely Welsh countryside..

I'm off to Achill in April, you could spent years travelling around Ireland and never get bored, the culture changes from one county to the next and the colour!!!

After edenbee made me realize my recent trip to Canada used nearly a whole tonne of co2 each way just to get there! I have decided to take of easy for a bit. I have booked to go camping on the isle of wight in the summer, it still involves taking a boat but it's a short trip and so I hope this will be much better for the environment all round.

I saw a great short video from VisitBritain once (although they don't seem to have it on their website) - I thought it was showing destinations around the world only to find it was all in the UK!

I have to say, Cornwall is lovely. The thought of hiring a cottage in the Scottish Highlands has also always appealed. You don't have to fly, can always get the train.

I'd second cornwall, it's an amazing place and really seems to have something that appeals to everyone.

There's a group of us going to the Isle of Wight sports festival this summer which is supposed to be a lot of fun. See http://www.whiteair.co.uk/ for more info on that and maybe I'll see some of you there???

I think we're a bit spoilt living in Brighton but I fancy some time away in Devon and Cornwall, and I love Yorkshire too. Oh and Derby!

I'm travelling from Ireland to France by rail and ferry for my holidays this year. I'm all about the website www.seat61.com which helps you figure out how to go just about anywhere in the world without flying - even random places like Iceland!
