Install bird boxes and feeders to encourage birds of a feather to flock together on your patch. They'll do a spot of pest control by dining on the creepy crawlies so your garden can bloom and grow. Pass the binoculars!
my kids love throwing all the remains of breaki or lunch, out the back... then watching the birds come and eat it! plus means i dont have much food waste in my bin..

You can make bird pudding like so:
Bird Pudding
Materials: One pound lard (or leftover cooking fat), one cup hot water, two cups oatmeal, one cup flour, four cups wild birdseed, large pan, mixing spoons.
Procedure: Soften the lard or fat over warm heat in the large pan. Add remaining ingredients and mix well.
Then just slathered into any kind of container-type feeder.
you should also make sure the plants you're planting provide enough cover for birds (shrubs, bushes, etc). They don't like to hang out in wide open spaces. Also, providing bird houses as part of their habitat in your backyard.
Checking out your window and in your area to see what kind of birds are there now may help in deciding what type of birdhouse to get for them.
I had a big mosquito problem at my old house in baltimore, so I worked to attract bats since they eat a million mosquitoes.
Basically the same steps though, figure out what type of bird (or bat) you want to attract and find out what it likes. :)

Ask your local off license for left-over wooden crates they have from when wine is brought in (you'd be amazed at how much wood is used for transport). Hang out with some kids and make a bird table for food or take yourself into a zen-state for the afternoon and get going with some creative DIY. I looked for a site to show how to do this but there's too many to choose from. Google for suggestions
