The only electric car out there with any pedigree is the REVAi (greenaer.ie).
There was the Mega City but that was basically just a French company putting ac-motors in mini petrol car chassis. I think they folded recently.
Keep an eye out for the REVAs development. It's probably the only EV operation with a production line complementing its R&D, which is also in full swing.
The big companies will, I am positive, botch their first few attempts at plug-ins and full EVs so expect Toyota to be rolling out something decent in 4-5 years. It's a shame because the technology is here as long as you keep an open mind to different driving paradigms.

Thanks Ecopreneur. What is airtricity -- do you mean Ecotricity? I'm researching electric cars for an informal car club (which I helped start) - are there any out that do more than 100 miles yet without needing a charge?
Consider electric cars for a real earth friendly drive
You can save up to the 1.4 tonnes of CO2 per year * based on airtricity and even if you charge it with the national average mix it comes down to 65 grs of CO2 per kilometer.
a Prius driven in "ideal conditions" does 106 grs ..
be delighted to answer questions about it if anyone is interested
